TCT Session. An assessment of the severity of lesions. A debate about the different methods to assess coronary physiology.
FFR is the gold standard (Dr. William Fearon) Dr. William reported on the benefits of using FFR:  • A high degree of accuracy in identifying lesions that cause ischemia . ...

THRIVE: Niacin/laropiprant extended release showed no significant cardiovascular benefit.
The THRIVE study, (also known as HPS2-THRIVE), was a multicenter clinical trial designed to test the hypothesis that the increase in HDL, (using ER niacin/laropiprant), could prevent vascular events ...

PREVAIL: LAA occlusion versus anticoagulation with warfarin to prevent stroke in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation.
An hour before the presentation of the PREVAIL study, the ACC announced the cancellation of the release of the study results. Due to an error in the email system, results of the study were ...

TCT Session
Alan Wilson and Szeto Zajarias show that vascular complications of the trans-femoral path remain an important factor because of the high profile of the catheters used in TAVI and the appearance ...

CHAMPION PHOENIX: Cangrelor compared with clopidogrel improves efficiency without increasing bleeding in patients undergoing angioplasty
Background: Oral antiplatelet agents have a limitation in their duration of action and bioavailability. Cangrelor is an intravenous adenosine diphosphate (ADP) inhibitor that has a powerful effect, ...

SELECT ACS: The Inclacumab seems to reduce myocardial injury post angioplasty
P-selectin is an adhesion molecule involved in the interactions between endothelial cells, platelets and leukocytes. Inclacumab is a recombinant monoclonal antibody against P-selectin, a potential ...

Possible benefit for patients with acute myocardial infarction but without ventricular dysfunction.
Background: To evaluate whether the administration of eplerenone 24 hours after an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in patients without heart failure reduces mortality and cardiovascular morbidity. ...

Possible benefit for patients with acute myocardial infarction but without ventricular dysfunction.
Background: To evaluate whether the administration of eplerenone 24 hours after an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in patients without heart failure reduces mortality and cardiovascular morbidity. ...

PRATO ACS: Rosuvastatin reduces the incidence of contrast nephropathy in patients with acute coronary syndrome who receive early invasive strategy
The aim of this study was to determine whether patients without ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndromes who were not taking statins previously, can receive high doses of rosuvastatin before ...

NEXT trial looked at a non-inferiority degradable polymer stent versus a second-generation permanent polymer stent.
Previous studies of non-inferiority (SORT-OUT III and V) compared the biodegradable polymer biolimus-eluting stent (BES) with permanent polymer stent and sirolimus -eluting stent (SES) or ...

PARTNER 2: Edwards SAPIEN XT is even better. Results for PARTNER II, cohort B.
In the PARTNER 1 study , patients with inoperable severe aortic stenosis treated with an aortic valve prosthesis balloon-expandable Edwards-SAPIEN showed a mortality reduction compared with ...

DKCRUSH-III: Crushing versus Culotte technique for left main coronary artery
Angioplasty of the unprotected distal left main coronary artery with 2 stents presents the less favorable results in the segment. The double kissing (DK) technique and Culotte technique have been ...

STREAM trial: It is time to check out facilitated angioplasty?
It is not clear so far whether pre-hospital fibrinolysis with early angiography could provide a clinical outcome similar to primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for acute myocardial ...

PRAGUE-6: off-pump versus in-pump CABG in high-risk patients
Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) without a cardiopulmonary bypass, (CBP), has increasingly become an alternative to the conventional standard (with pump). However, it is still controversial ...

STOP-HF: The use of B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) for screening high-risk population decreases the prevalence of heart failure
B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) can be a reliable marker for the diagnosis of heart failure (HF). This study aimed to assess whether the use of BNP for screening a population at high risk of ...

RELAX Study: Phosphodieserase-5 inhibitors showed no benefit in heart failure with preserved ventricular function.
Phosphodieserase-5 enzyme is activated in heart failure and can limit the beneficial effects of nitric oxide, (NO), in the vasculature, kidney and myocardium. The benefits of phosphodiesterase ...

ASTRONAUT: Aliskiren failed to show benefits in patients with acute heart failure
Hospitalization for heart failure, (HF), represents a major health problem with high rates of death or early readmission after discharge. The aim of this study was to investigate whether aliskiren, ...

PARTNER cohort A at three years, the benefit continues
The PARTNER Cohort A randomized 699 elderly patients, (mean age 84.1), with severe aortic stenosis for TAVI or conventional surgery in 26 centers. The group of patients who received TAVI was divided ...

MASS COMM: Elective angioplasty can be performed in hospital with or without emergency surgical support.
Increasingly, the frequent performances of elective angioplasties are in hospitals that do not have a cardiac surgery team. The occurrence for the need of emergency surgery varies from 0.1 to 0.4% ...

CABG off-pump, same results at one year-pump surgery.
The relative benefits and risks of off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) as compared with the use of CBP are not clearly defined. The CORONARY trial in 79 centers randomized 4,752 patients ...

GOPCABE: similar results for in-pump or off-pump surgery in elderly patients
Background: There is much debate about a possible benefit of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) without cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) compared with on-pump surgery. However, a randomized study ...
