SOL SOLACI carried out a new intervention in Argentina using bioabsorbable stents in pulmonary branches

SOLACI’s Solidarity Program — an initiative with more than 10 years of experience that guarantees equitable access to high-complexity cardiovascular interventions for vulnerable populations across Latin America and the Caribbean — continues to strengthen its commitment to public health and institutional social responsibility. Its mission is clear: to provide high-quality therapeutic solutions to patients without financial resources or medical coverage, through the collaboration of healthcare centers, scientific societies, and industry partners.

Case presentation with Dr. Alejandro Peirone

Within this framework, a procedure was carried out in Argentina: a balloon angioplasty with implantation of fully bioabsorbable stents in distal pulmonary branches in a 4-year-old boy from a rural area near Frías, Santiago del Estero, diagnosed with complex truncus arteriosus.

The intervention was performed at the Children’s Hospital of Córdoba by Dr. Alejandro Peirone, pediatric interventional cardiologist and SOLACI Member, with the support of the local team and the participation of one of SOLACI’s founders, Dr. Hugo Londero. Thanks to the Solidarity Program’s coordination, SIPROTEC donated the devices — used for the first time in the country — while local authorities and the hospital’s support organization provided logistical assistance for the family.

Every child with congenital heart disease must receive the same quality of care, whether they have medical coverage or not.

This technology is especially beneficial for pediatric patients, as the device can be reabsorbed within 24 months, facilitating future reinterventions and accompanying the child’s natural growth. After the procedure, the patient showed a significant reduction in proximal pulmonary pressure and was able to be discharged the following day.

During the case presentation, the Director of the Solidarity Program, Dr. Marcelo Halac, emphasized the profound purpose of the initiative:

The joy of seeing the face of the patient and their family when the problem is solved motivates us to continue. These solidarity actions plant a seed that multiplies.

Today, the Solidarity Program is nearing 100 completed cases, turning good intentions into sustained, carefully planned, and evaluated medical actions. The collaborative effort among all stakeholders continues to drive improved access to state-of-the-art cardiovascular care throughout the region.
