MATRIX: Transradial vs. Femoral Access in Non-ST Elevation AMI

The MATRIX study showed that the transradial access is associated with a reduction of combined events, death, infarction, stroke and bleeding, compared to femoral access, in ACS patients.
The goal of this sub-analyzis was to evaluate the hypothesis stating that the benefit of the transradial approach is similar in non ST and ST elevation AMI (NSTEMI and STEMI).
The transradial approach rendered a significant reduction of events in the NSTEMI group (p=0.01) that was not significant in the STEMI group.
Similarly, a significant reduction of bleeding was observed in the NSTEMI group (p=0.02) that did not reach statistical significance in the STEMI group (p=0.18). Crossover rate with the femoral approach was higher in STEMI patients.

 

Conclusion
Data in this pre-specified analyzis of the MATRIX study suggest that transradial approach benefits observed in the complete cohort of patients are more consistent in the NSTEMI group.
