SOLACI/SBHCI 2023: Scientific Coverage – Day 2

The second day of the SOLACI/SBHCI 2023 Congress, the largest interventional cardiology meeting in Latin America, organized by the Latin American Society of Interventional Cardiology (SOLACI) and the Brazilian Society of Hemodynamics and Interventional Cardiology (SBHCI), held in Rio de Janeiro, featured various national and international guests, along with important sessions on the main topics related to coronary and structural intervention.

In the Copacabana room, there was a day filled with activity with several joint sessions of interventional cardiology societies from around the world. The first joint session was the EuroPCR & SOLACI/SBHCI session on the state of the art of TAVI, with the international participation from Bernard Prendergast (GBR), Eberhard Grube (DEU), Janar Sathananthan (CAN), and Ole de Backer (DNK). Next, live demonstrations of coronary angioplasty with high-definition imaging and TAVI with cerebral protection were presented directly from Germany, led by Dr. Mohamed Abdel-Wahab.

In the afternoon, we had a joint session of ICI & SOLACI/SBHCI on innovations in Interventional Cardiology in 2023, with the presence of Dr. Chaim Lotan (ISR). Then, live cases were presented from the National Institute of Cardiology (INC) in Rio de Janeiro, featuring the participation of Dr. Daniel Chamié (USA) in a complex case of calcified lesion. To conclude the day in this room, we also had a joint session of SCAI & SOLACI/SBHCI on myocardial infarction and cardiogenic shock, with the international presence of Dr. Roxana Mehran (USA) and Dr. George Dangas (USA).

In the Ipanema room, the day was dedicated to discussing interventions in coronary diseases, starting with a session on coronary physiology and imaging, followed by a session on bifurcation and left main coronary lesions, with the international presence of Goran Stankovic (SRB) and Shao-Liang Chen (CHN), both important and recognized leaders in the treatment of bifurcation lesions. During the afternoon, edited cases from the Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo on drug-coated balloons and IVL, as well as a case from the Dante Pazanesse Institute in São Paulo of a complex left main coronary lesion, were presented, with the participation of Dr. Shao-Liang Chen (CHN) as a guest operator. Following that, experts in chronic occlusions took the stage for a discussion on the approach to chronic lesions, with the international presence of João Brum da Silveira (PRT) and Daniel Weilenmann (CHE).

The first session in the Leblon room, designated for the discussion of structural interventions, was dedicated to interventions in the tricuspid valve. Next, innovations and new devices for mitral intervention were presented, with the presence of Mayra Guerrero (USA). In the afternoon, edited cases of ViV (Valve-in-Valve) Mitral and TAVI performed in Brazil and China were presented. A case-based session on atrial appendage closure was also conducted, with the participation of Dr. Ole De Backer (DEN). The last session of this room was reserved for the presentation of edited cases of TAVI with a new self-expandable prosthesis (Venus Medtech) directly from China, with Dr. Yan Wang (CHN), and a case of atrial flow regulator device implantation for patients with refractory heart failure, directly from the Heart Institute of São Paulo.

The discussion on congenital heart diseases continued on the second day in the Arpoador room, starting with live cases directly from Rio de Janeiro, followed by a trans-catheter pulmonary valve intervention case directly from Qatar with Ziyad Hijazi (QAT). Then, a session was presented, highlighting the importance of a multidisciplinary team in congenital diseases. In the afternoon, we had two edited cases from Brazil. At the end of the day, the session was focused on percutaneous pulmonary valve intervention, with the international presence of Marcelo Rivarola (ARG), Lee Benson (CAN), and Shakeel Qureshi (GBR).

The São Conrado room was dedicated to extracardiac interventions, with carotid angioplasty as the first topic discussed on the day, followed by a session on renal and pulmonary denervation with the presence of Shao-Liang Chen (CHN). The last session featured an interesting discussion on when peripheral intervention meets structural cardiac intervention.

The Urca room was the venue for the MINT & MIL Symposium, which deals with the importance of female leadership in medicine and interventional cardiology, with various sessions and important national and international figures such as Roxana Mehran (USA), Mayra Guerrero (USA), and Carla Agatiello (ARG), showing how to build and promote equality in medicine and strategies for developing women’s careers.

In the Leme room, training sessions on simulators with arterial puncture guided by ultrasound continued. In the afternoon, there was a session on TAVI and balloon-expandable devices, as well as valve-in-valve mitral training.

The Barra da Tijuca room was chosen for the discussions of the nursing team working day-to-day in the hemodynamics laboratory. It also featured a satellite symposium on calcified lesions and the use of IVL as an aid in intervention.
