Hair: measuring stress and cardiovascular disease

A recent study has shown that hair analysis allows us to evaluate the level of cortisol and stress hormone over a few months while the results from blood tests indicate the status only at the particular time of the test. A rising level of cortisol, like hypertension and excess abdominal fat, increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Scientists assessed the cortisol level of 283 people aged between 65 and 83. Sections of hair three inches from the closest to the root contained information about the level of cortisol during the previous three months. In the subjects who showed a high level of the hormone signs of disease such as stroke, diabetes or arterial problems were most frequently noticed.

Scientists point out that additional studies are needed to determine how the data on the level of long-term cortisol can serve to cure or prevent cardiovascular diseases. .
