Tuberculous pericarditis is associated with high morbidity and mortality. This study included 1400 patients with definite or probable tuberculous pericarditis to receive prednisolone or placebo for 6 weeks. Two-thirds of patients had concomitant HIV infection. The primary end point was a composite of death, tamponade, or constrictive pericarditis. No significant differences between those who received corticosteroids versus those receiving placebo (23, 8% versus 24, 5%; p=0.66) were observed.
