Stopping smoking reduces risk of stroke in the elderly

Quitting smoking reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke during moments of great stress and also in old age says a study released today by the German Center for Cancer Research (DKFZ). A smoker of 60 years has many risks of heart attack as opposed to a 19 years-old man non-smoker.

Still, those who cease smoking in old age can also have positive results soon. This was the conclusion of a study of eight thousand inhabitants of the German state of Sarre. The positive effects of quitting smoking can be observed almost immediately, the risk of heart attacks and strokes after five years are reduced by 40%.
